TAGHAZOUT

aBOUT THE CITY

Once simply a small fishing village near Agadir, Taghazout has, over recent years, become a tourist destination in its own right. This newfound interest is all down to one thing – Taghazout’s growing reputation as Morocco’s top surf spot.

Surfers of all levels can enjoy the waves around Taghazout, and you can paddle out and take on exotic sounding surf breaks such as Hash Point, Panorama, Anchor Point, La Source, Killer Point and Mysteries. The water is warm, the days are sunny, and as in any surfing town, the vibe in Taghazout is relaxed and laid-back.

It’s easy to get around Taghazout; the size of the village means everywhere is reachable on foot. Slightly further afield are the spectacular Imouzzer Cascades and Agadir is just twelve miles to the south.

TAGHAZOUT BEACHES

With Taghazout’s growing reputation as a surf spot par excellence, you might think that you wouldn’t be able to find a patch of sand that wasn’t covered by boards and wetsuits. However, thanks to its length (two miles) and breadth there’s plenty of space for everyone to enjoy themselves on Taghazout beach, whether you want to hit the surf, enjoy lying in the sun, or perhaps want to rustle up some lunch on a barbecue. It’s even possible to hire horses and camels and ride along the length of the beach, hooves pounding through the surf.

TAGHAZOUT FOOD AND DRINK

The village of Taghazout is surf central, and as you’d expect the cuisine on offer reflects this. Coffee, fruit juice, smoothies, frozen yoghurt and chocolate chilli brownies are all on sale along the beachfront, along with plenty of traditional Moroccan dishes to replace those calories burnt on the board.

Being a coastal resort, fresh seafood plays a big part in the Taghazout diet and is served everyday alongside delicious staples including spicy tangines and flavoursome kefta. Several places in Taghazout offer European dishes like pizza, French cuisine, and even burgers for the less adventurous diner. Food is generally good value and people tend to eat out for this reason, leading to an ebullient and sociable dining culture.

TAGHAZOUT KITE SURFING

Taghazout is already famous around the world for being an amazing surf spot, and kite-users should also give it some serious consideration. The beach is glorious, the water is warm and the sun shines for 350 days of the year. As you’d expect of a surf town the atmosphere is relaxed, the people are friendly and there are plenty of places to hire equipment and take lessons.
When you hit the water you can take advantage of the trade winds that blow strongly along the coast to pick up good speed. And of course the famous waves that roll in continuously give you an ideal opportunity for some wave riding.

TAGHAZOUT MOTORCYCLING

Morocco’s most famous surfing destination is also a great place for bikers. It’s a village where surf culture dominates, so if you’re one of those adventurous types who are touring Morocco on a motorbike you’ll fit right in. Even if you’re not touring you can still get on two wheels easily; several places will hire you a bike, either in Taghazout or nearby Agadir. Once you’ve mounted up it won’t take you long to ride through the narrow streets of this small fishing village and head out east to explore the rugged terrain of this part of Morocco, including the scenic Paradise Valley.

TAGHAZOUT PEOPLE

Like many places along the Moroccan coastline, Taghazout has both African and European roots, since Amazigh and Spanish have made their home here over the years. However, the Taghazout people have almost exclusively been shaped by the roaring Atlantic and the unique topography of its coast. These two factors create some of the best surf in the world and have drawn boarders from across the world to this little Moroccan town, in turn replacing the usual bustling Moroccan character with the feel of Newquay or Australia’s Gold Coast. The people are relaxed and laid-back, as you’d expect, making Taghazout a very pleasant place to visit.

TAGHAZOUT SURFING

Once a sleepy fishing village, as the years have gone by Taghazout has become one of the key destinations on the global surf map. It’s a place that has embraced surf culture wholeheartedly – reggae music drifts from local cafes and there is that distinct vibe about the town – and several surf schools have sprung up to help you catch some of the best waves on the planet. Ten foot points and six foot walls roll in regularly, but there are just as many spots for beginners to learn the craft. From Killer Point to Banana Beach, this is the place for surfing in Morocco.
